Rottnest Island Essential Hints and Safety Tips

A number of planned works and service improvements are taking place across Rottnest Island  to refresh and revitalise Rottnest Island facilities. As part of our plan to enhance your future visits, you will notice improvements taking place across many locations during your visit, including the resurfacing of the road network of the Settlement area by Main Roads WA. This is the first asphalt resurfacing program to ever be completed on the island and will improve the aging road surface for pedestrians and cyclists. During your visit or stay to Rottnest Island, the road works will include road preparation and the laying of asphalt. You may experience noise from the equipment and vehicles in use, and odour from the asphalt. The roads incorporating the work area will be closed during this time. The works will occur from 7am to 5pm Monday to Sunday from July through to September 2020. There will be a traffic management team to assist pedestrians and cyclists to safely move around any impacted areas.

Should you have further specific requirements in your Rottnest Island Authority accommodation or your visit, please do not hesitate to contact the Rottnest Island Authority Visitor Services team on 1800 111 111.

Please refer back to this list for updates on planned works taking place and how they may impact your visit:

  • Observe but do not touch or feed the wildlife. On the spot fines of $150.00 may apply to anyone seen interfering with animals (including feeding).
  • Beware of snakes in terrestrial areas.
  • Beware of rocks, currents, waves, boats and wildlife when swimming.
  • Rottnest Island is a high fire risk area. Fires are prohibited at all times.
  • Helmets are compulsory by law in Western Australia when cycling. Please ride safely and responsibly and keep left on all paths. Stay on the cycle and walk paths to protect flora.
  • As tempting as it may be to “borrow” a bike, please be aware that this is considered stealing and a criminal offence.
  • Treat Indigenous and heritage sites with respect.
  • Leave only footprints! Take your rubbish with you and keep Rottnest beautiful.
  • Disabled access toilets located at the Visitor Centre, Bedford Ave, Henderson Ave, Geordie Bay and Parker Point.
  • All commercial filming and drone usage (including personal usage) must be approved by the Rottnest Island Authority. Visit
